“This evening is the night before I give a huge speech. As more seasoned readers of my writing would note, I haven’t done much of these before. Or never.

Ever.

Ever.

I’m nervous about public speaking. It even takes all of my might to pretend I’m not terrified during my mini fun-fact speeches. But my group won an award, and we’re presenting in front of many serious people.

People who went to Cornell and Columbia.

People who live all the way in Toronto and New York City.

And here I am at the dinner table in my small little town, trying to remember that these people aren’t much better than me.

They’re just older, and smarter. But they’re not better.

Because they’re the ones coming to hear me speak, and this time I’m the one who’s got something to say.”
